The Natural Garden offers each and every Perennial Plant of the Year Selection since 1991. This year we are excited to offer Hakonechloa as the 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year.

Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ (golden hakone grass) is the Perennial Plant Association’s 2009 Plant of the Year. Golden Hakone Grass grows 12 to 18” tall with an arching form that resembles a cascading miniature bamboo. It grows best in moist, humus rich soil in bright shade where it provides a bright color accent. Shade gardeners will be glad to know that deer are known to avoid it. Hakone Grass can be used as a ground cover, a single focal point and is especially nice when spilling over the edge of a wall, along a pathway, or even in a container. It can give an Asian or tropical look to the garden.
